Smoke detector malfunction complaint
We have 1O Kidde smoke detector fire alarms, one installed on the ceiling of every room of the house, as required by the building inspector in our town. They are battery powered and radio-connected, so that when one alarm sounds, they all go off at once. We have never had a fire, but we have often had the smoke detectors go off during the night, probably because that is when the air cools to near the dew point. It ruins our sleep and scares us half to death, not to mention endangering our hearing. It’s usually around 3 or 4 AM, and the only way to stop them from making their deafening screech is to take the batteries out of all of them. This must be a common problem, because there is an internet page about it, as I discovered by [REDACTED] smoke detectors false alarms when air is humid.
We have put up with this happening two or three times a summer for years, but I finally reached a breaking point when the detectors went off twice during one night (early morning, actually, at 3 :30 AM and again at 4 AM}. Then they went off again the following afternoon at 2 PM, when it was raining outdoors. We could not live with this, so my husband got a ladder and took out all the batteries.
The number of malfunctions we have experienced is unacceptable for a product that is required. It is unreasonable to expect us to keep our windows closed at hight. The only way to live with them is to disable them but disabling them is not a satisfactory solution.
