I sustained several laceration and contusion injuries as a result of what may have been a product failure of my 15.5 ft Ohuhu Telescoping ladder. I was seen and treated at my local ER in Burlington WI where I had both a severe head laceration and a severe elbow laceration stitched. Thankfully there were no breaks or fractures.
The ladder in question had been purchased through Amazon in May 2019 and had worked well until Oct 14. I had extended the ladder to full length and placed in up against the face wall of my garage in order to reinstall a remote security camera. I was maybe 10- 12 feet up when the ladder began to fall to the ground. I’m not sure, but think I rolled out to my left before impacting the driveway – elbow first, then left shoulder, knee and finally my head came into contact with the ladder, and I suffered a significant laceration. At the time I did not realize that I also lacerated my elbow quite badly.
My wife took me to the local ER, where I was attended to by the staff. No broken bones, fractures or head trauma other than the laceration were determined by the X-Rays and CT workups.
Yesterday, Oct 17 I took a good look at the ladder and the area of the driveway where the incident took place. There were no slip marks on the asphalt, but two of the upper ladder rungs showed damage, The uppermost could have been from impact – it is uneven in nature. The lower rung appeared different – a very straight cleaving on both sides of the rung holder.
I contacted the company through their contact us page and offered them the ladder for inspection. I received their reply this morning. It said:
Thanks for contacting us.
We apologize for the fright and inconvenience this has caused you. Is your injury better now? This is kindly to let you know that we have already issued a full refund for your order through amazon. Also, we have recently received feedback from other customer and have picked up their ladder for testing and analysis by our product team, so you do not need to return the ladder. Please stop using this ladder and get rid of it.
We are sorry again for the inconvenience caused and appreciated for your understanding.
Based on their response it’s possible that my incident may be due to a product failure or safety issue. I note that Ohuhu no longer sells the 15.5 ft version through Amazon, though I do see very similar product under the [REDACTED], [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] names.
Please let me know your thoughts on this situation.
Thanks in advance
