I was using a Cuisinart 8″ stainless skillet (model 722-20) to cook on low heat. When I reached in with a spatula, I heard a loud “POP” noise like a gunshot and was in shock.
After I came to, I realized my thumb was in pain and lacerated from penetrating trauma and there was a small bit of metal that had shot across the room, leaving a divot in the wall some 12 ft. away. My ears were still ringing over an hour later.
From what I can tell, there is a metal cap on one of the rivets which was turned into a projectile and bounced off of my thumb before still having enough energy to make said divot. I assume a small amount of moisture was behind it and it expanded until it exploded (like popcorn).
