Coffee mug was purchased 10/14/2022. Label in glaze on bottom says ‘kiks co.’ and ‘dishwasher safe’ and ‘microwave safe.’ A removable paper label said it had been made in China.
I put the mug through the dishwasher the day I purchased it. The day after purchase I filled the mug with water, about 10 oz, and put it in a [REDACTED] microwave for 2.5 minutes to heat for tea. I do this twice a day, and have been heating water in a mug with microwave ovens for decades. Today, when I tried to remove the mug from the oven, the handle was so hot that I suffered a second degree burn on one finger and first degree burns on two other fingers. Let me emphasize that these burns were from the handle of the mug, and possibly from briefly touching the body of the mug with the back of one finger as I grasped the handle. The water in the mug did not spill and was not the cause of the burns.
When the mug had cooled enough to handle, I filled it with water again and repeated the microwaving process. I checked the temperature of the handle with an instant read kitchen thermometer. It read 140 degrees F. This mug could not have been handled safely without an oven mitt.
