55B30BP, 070120, Quick Access Safe
Product is Cabela’s Biometric Personal Gun Safe. This was used by my father to protect his handguns from his grandchildren. He would program the safe for his fingerprint, and it would work for a few weeks and block unauthorized individuals. However, while at his house a few weeks later I tried my own fingerprint and it opened the safe. I had my children try their finger prints and it opened the safe. We thought it was a defective unit so we returned it for a different one. The new unit had the exact same problem, so we returned it for a different brand safe.
I found the following statement in the users manual: “When you first receive your safe there are no recorded fingerprints. Any fingerprint will open the safe until a fingerprint is recorded.”
The unit did not work as indicated in the manual, because any fingerprint would work even after the first one was recorded.
We talked to the sales people at the Cabela’s store and they said quite a few gun safes had been returned because of this exact same complaint. We called Cabela’s phone number tech support, and they said they had never heard of this issue. Either it was a lie or it is not being reported properly.
The safe is not available online, but it is still available in the store. These should not only be removed from sale but there should be a recall and removed from homes. They do not operate as intended and present a hazard to the public because unauthorized people can access guns.
